About
Intricate Theatre

AN EMERGING UK THEATRE COMPANY

Intricate Theatre are an emerging UK theatre company, founded by Floriane Laroche, Malachy Luckie and Emily Thomas at the Guildford School of Acting, 2019.

Intricate Theatre seek to create work which explores the intricacies of human nature and the world around us. We look at small moments in order to talk about things that are big. We combine different practices and mediums including dance, drama, music and visual arts to create vibrant and ground-breaking work on stage. Our work is steeped in detailed research and academic enquiry in order to deliver intelligent, emotive and engaging performances.

Our first production debuts this May at Theatre Delicatessen in South London. HABITUS is a provocative, close-proximity performance which explores the complexities of modern intimacy. Structured around a first date, we will observe the intricacies of human interactions while collectively opening up our understanding of what modern intimacy is, or could be. Are doctors appointments intimate? Can we have an intimate relationship with a tube of lipstick? Join us on a date to find out.

Floriane grew up in the French Alps before moving to the UK to pursue higher education at the University of Surrey. During her degree she took a professional training year at Candoco Dance Company – a pioneering inclusive dance company in London where she assisted various departments such as Programming and Touring, Marketing and Communications and Learning and Administration. Some of her highlights on placement included helping to programme performances/learning opportunities across the UK and beyond, and booking travel and accommodation for tours and international events. Floriane helped to boost Candoco’s presence by introducing them to Instagram stories, acting as their rehearsal photographer, creating a web chronicle and undertaking various communication tasks to promote the company’s work. Floriane also performed with Cando2, Candoco’s youth dance company in Sheffield and at Hofesh Shechter’s ‘East Wall’ production at the Tower of London for the Lift! Festival. Floriane’s primary background is in theatre however, and through Intricate Theatre she is excited to investigate contemporary issues through performance that moves away from traditional theatre.

Malachy is originally from Essex and came to study at the University of Surrey to pursue an interest in theatre-making. For his placement year during the degree, Malachy worked with Theatre Deli at their venue The Old Library where his biggest achievement was setting up and producing the Deli Comedy Club and Deli Comedy Festival. The festival was a month-long season of comedy featuring 45 work-in-progress shows from upcoming and established comedians, featuring names such as Romesh Ranganathan, Marcus Brigstocke and Felicity Ward. Deli Comedy’s ethos was to consistently programme comedians from under-represented backgrounds and the festival gained recognition from Funny Women for its positive gender representation. He also worked on scratch nights, music nights, theatre and dance performances, a children’s theatre festival and a festival celebrating refugee week. Malachy hopes to bring his experience at Theatre Deli to create provocative work with Intricate Theatre that explores contemporary topics in unconventional but accessible ways.

Emily is originally from West Sussex and began developing a keen interest in the arts from a young age. Originally from a dance background training mainly in Jazz and contemporary, Emily became more inspired by the theatrical arts and the ways in which the two art forms can work in cohesion. Emily has always had the desire to create fresh and current work throughout her 4 years at Surrey University. Whilst on a year-long placement with the inclusive dance company Stopgap, Emily experienced invaluable skills in the industry such as marketing, communications and costume design. She helped the company with the running of their most recent production The Seafarers, which was performed at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival. She also got to experience first-hand the importance of such a prominent company in the UK dance sector and assisted weekly classes. Emily is very passionate about Intricate Theatre and hopes their upcoming piece 'Habitus' is an exciting venture for the team behind it and the audiences who experience it.
